If you’re tired of suffering through another hot summer, Midway Heating wants to present you with cooling solutions for your Portland home.

Since everyone has different needs, we’ll feature a variety of cooling equipment and discuss the benefits of each.

Here’s some questions to help narrow down what kind of equipment would be best for you.

  • Do you need to cool your entire house or just 1 or 2 rooms?
  • Is your furnace old and possibly in need of replacement?
  • Do you currently have a/c or a heat pump?
  • What is your budget?
  • How important is energy efficiency to you?
  • Do you currently have a gas line to your home?

Be mindful that your home’s current heating and cooling system should also play a role in your decision.

3 cooling options to fit your budget

Air conditioning is a whole home solution

If you currently have an older A/C unit that’s prone to break down or just isn’t keeping your home as cool as you’d like, then upgrading to a more energy efficient unit is the smart choice. For starters, your home’s HVAC system is already set up for a/c so installation will be easier than if you’ve never had it.

There’s been major advances in energy efficiency so if your current unit is over 10 years old, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the money you can save every month on your cooling bills. You don’t even have to buy the ‘top of the line’ model to see savings.

Best cooling for those on a budget?

While we see our share of hot weather, our temps are usually not over 100 and if we do have a hot spell, it doesn’t last long. That’s why the XC14 from Lennox with a SEER rating of 16 is our best seller because it’ll cool your home without breaking your budget-that’s something every Portlander loves!

Since most people don’t need to run their a/c every day or 24/7, you can install a model that’s less expensive and still energy efficient to save plenty of money on your monthly cooling costs.

Ultimate comfort and most efficient

If you want the absolute best a/c on the market, then the XC25 is the model for you. With 26 SEER, it’s the most efficient unit you can buy while also being the quietest, which can be a real concern for some people.

When you want precision comfort, you can’t get any better than this. The unit will adjust itself in increments as small as 1% so it doesn’t use any more energy than absolutely necessary to keep the temp inside exactly where you set it.

Like your furnace that heats your entire home, an air conditioning unit keeps your entire house cool, which makes everyone happy. The exception being if you’ve remodeled and added a new room that does not have duct work that connects to your heating and cooling system. In this situation, a ductless heat pump is recommended.

Ductless heat pump works for 1 or multiple rooms

Sometimes you only have a few rooms that get too hot (or too cold) so you may be looking for a partial home solution. Another example would be that you’ve remodeled and the new addition doesn’t have ductwork so you need cooling and heating for that one area.

This is where a ductless heat pump works beautifully as you can get models that work for 1 room or multiple rooms-whatever you need. Like a heat pump, it both cools and heats but unlike a traditional heat pump, there’s no duct work so it’s quicker and easier to install.

Benefits of ductless heat pump

  • Works for 1 or multiple rooms
  • Energy efficient-you save money and energy
  • Easy, fast install-no ductwork
  • Precise temp control-each room has its own control
  • Built-in air filtration system-helps those with allergies or asthma

Our best-selling ductless units are from Daikin and Mitsubishi. Whether you need a unit for 1 room or multiple rooms, they work the same way-the outside unit connects to the indoor unit via a small conduit.

Up to 8 indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit (depending on the make/model you select) and each indoor unit has its own remote control so the temperature can be individually set for the ultimate in savings and comfort. The indoor units install on the wall or ceiling (again, depends on make/model) so they are out of the way.

Heat pump cools and heats

If you currently have an older heat pump that has broken down or just not very efficient because it’s over 10 years old, then upgrading to one of the high efficiency models is probably your best bet. With recent advances in technology, a new heat pump will be more energy efficient so you’ll save money year round as your heat pump works with your furnace to help heats your home in the cooler months.

Since you already have one installed, your HVAC system is already set up for a heat pump so installation will take less time and labor than if you don’t. If you have an aging furnace, you may want to upgrade both at the same time as it’ll save on labor and you may qualify for incentives or rebates.

The bottom line is this-there’s many cooling solutions for Portland homeowners and each have their advantages. It really depends on your unique situation, the current heating and cooling system in your home and how much money you want to spend.
